Thinking About Skipping Keyword Research? Think Again PDF Print E-mail

Some website owners, particularly the novices who have just enough SEO and marketing know-how to hang themselves, think about skipping keyword research altogether, or at the very least -- waiting until after they've laid out the framework for their website. Either way, this is a dangerous proposition -- there's a reason why keyword research is available today, and website owners who hope to be successful online would be wise to heed this advice: Don't skip the keyword research.

Keyword research should be done now, not later

Keyword research is so important that you should do it before you develop your website, purchase a domain name, or even lock yourself into a particular idea for a website. Yes, before you complete your brainstorming project, provided that you do hash out your plans before you take action in building an online business, you should absolutely perform keyword research.

See, keyword research isn't just about helping you to determine the best keywords for your market; one of its more important features is that it can help you to determine the best market to target, period.

Far too often, a budding online business owner will have an idea, and they'll want to run with it. Now, there's nothing wrong with being motivated and taking action -- taking action is good, but taking action based on a viable plan is even better. With the proper keyword research, you can identify a market that is going to give you the best chances of a return on your investment, instead of picking a market simply because it sounds good to you, and then hoping for the best.

As an example, let's say that you want to setup a website to promote web hosting affiliate programs. This is a great moneymaking market -- there are millions to be made here, quite literally. However, should you jump into this market without the proper preliminary keyword research, you'll soon discover that it's next to impossible to make any money as a newcomer to this market -- it's way too crowded.

Keyword research can help you avoid jumping into markets where the competition is so stiff that you'll be spinning in circles for months, or years, before you start to see a substantial payday.

Keyword research helps you to target the right crowd

Most website owners hope to make money with their websites -- this is no surprise. However, what many website owners do not know is that not all keywords will help them with their goals of making money with their website. Sometimes, your keyword choice can attract all the wrong people -- namely, freebie-seekers and information seekers.

As an example, let's say that you plan to run an email-based service, or maybe you plan to setup a website promoting various email-based services, tools, etc. Taking this further, let's suppose that you use the phrase 'email service' to represent your website. Even without keyword research, you probably know that this is a very popular phrase, and one that many other website owners use. However, without keyword research, you're not going to know that the term 'email service' is more likely to bring in 'browsers' instead of 'buyers'. Another thing that you are not going to know, is that by changing your primary phrase to 'email marketing service', your chances of attracting buyers increases exponentially. In simple terms, keyword research, in situations like these, can help you to create an environment that will attract people who will spend money, and therefore help you with your goals of making money with your website.

There is a reason why keyword research exists, and there's a reason why it's so highly recommended -- it gives you the chance to succeed online as a business owner. Maybe you don't have time for keyword research, or maybe you don't know how to research keywords and don't care to learn how. If this is the case, pay somebody to do it for you -- keyword research services exist for this very reason. Bottom line, though -- don't skip the keyword research, because instead of saving time, you'll likely end up wasting time and losing money in the end.

If you want to do keyword research yourself, here are some great free keyword research tools and keyword research software. Or you can hire the professionals to do keyword service for you.
